There are not any! The culinary field is one of the most stressful careers to become involved in. I know.

Professionally, I suppose cooking is a whole different ballgame. However, I LOVE to cook, I find it therapeutic on many many levels.

For one, I am a nurturer/caretaker. When I have people over, one way I can show them I love them is to cook for them. It is a warm fuzzy for me and knowing that I treat my loved ones well helps me know that I am doing my part in relationships. I also get the benefit of knowing that my friends ALL love coming over to eat, so I always have company!

Two, I have ADHD. I need stimulation but usually I am easily overwhelmed with things that compete for my attention. Nowhere but in the kitchen can I manage so many tasks, a similar list in the office, in an emergency, etc, would have me scrambling and in tears. So cooking is a confidence builder and probably trains my mind to be more focussed in other areas of my life, like a workout would strengthen your body for other daily tasks. I also like the challenge of puzzles, and making a meal come together on time and in a pleasing way is very much like a puzzle for me. Having confidence and being successful is very much a stress reliever because you aren’t worrying about what other people think, I suppose unless your reputation in the kitchen starts to precede you and then you have performance anxiety or turn perfectionistic about it.

I also love to create. I find the same stimulation and satisfaction from cooking and baking that a lot of people get from arts and crafts.

And lastly, I like to eat, and I need to eat and I take care of my mother with a chronic illness. Cooking is a necessity for most people to be independent, and if you aren’t independent in self care, you lose a lot of dignity, worry about how your needs will be met, etc. Money is always tight for me, so I am very relieved that I know how to turn cheap food into healthy delicious fare and again, confident that I am independent in the areas of managing a kitchen, hosting gatherings, and putting food together.

First off, please vote Musicimprovedme’s response as best answer. I couldn’t have put it better. I’m just adding my two-cents down here!

I love to shop, cook and please people. There are no greater joys in my life, but hell, that’s how I roll! “Laissez les bons-temps rouler!”

I find when I’m hunting shop to shop for the needed spice, the undisjointed oxtail, the perfect fifth of mead, and all those other crazy obstacles we put ourselve through to make the perfect meal a “succes fou” I can distract myself from anything troubling my mind or my heart.

When something’s troubling you, shop then cook! It’s a lot cheaper than therapy, and all that home cooking (you’ve only yourself to thank) is the perfect panacea for most problems. It certainly cures homesickness, at the very least. And it certainly makes you a lot happier knowing that you’re eating healthier and eating meals just like grandma used to make!
